Importing Data into Simply Track

Importing your data into Simply Track from your online broker is very easy. There are two ways to import your trade history into simply track

1. File Import

Using this option you will download your trade history into Excel/.CSV(Comma separated value)/.TXT file and then use Simply Track file import wizard to import your trades. Simply Track supports most file formats such as .CSV, Excel, .QIF, .TXF, .OFX. All you need to do is login to your online broker account and go to account History and Download the Trades into .CSV (Comma Separated Values) or Excel format and Import Into Simply Track. You can even Copy and Paste from Your trade history log into Simply Track import window. During the import Simply Track automatically matches your Buy Trades with Sell Trades and Vice Versa so that you can generate schedule D with Wash Sale Calculations.

2. Online Import

This is Quickest and easiest way. Using this option you will simply type your account number and password, and then Simply Track securely connects to your broker account to download your trades. This option is supported for select brokers and some are limit access to the last 90 days of trade history.

Using generic file import options you should be able to import your trades from any excel spreadsheet or text file. You will have to tell Simply Track column numbers from spreadsheet for fields like Trade date, Action, Symbol, Quantity, Price, Commission. If your preparing trades manually, make a text file using MS Excel or any other word processing program, create comma delimited text file (CSV) or Excel spread sheet like this. The file must be in this format and last column (sec Fee) is optional.

Ameritrade/Datek

Online Import

Ameritrade customers can download trade history using Simply Track online import. Before you start downloading the trades you must login to your Ameritrade account to setup PIN.

Login to Ameritrade account

  1. Click on Portfolio & Accounts
  2. Click on My Profile
  3. Click on Personal profile
  4. Click on Edit button next PIN to change your PIN
  5. Also make a note of account number on same screen

Once you have account number of PIN ready

  1. Start Simply Track
  2. Click on File->Online Import
  3. Under account held with, select “Ameritrade”
  4. Under Customer Id, enter Ameritrade account number
  5. Under Password/Pin, enter your Ameritrade PIN
  6. Click on connect
  7. If you are downloading first time, make sure you check the box “import into new portfolio” and enter portfolio name “Ameritrade account”. Note: Simply Track automatically remembers your last download date and all your subsequent downloads are trade changes from last download.
  8. Click next, you should see all your trades in a download window.
  9. Click on “Match Trades” button to perform your trade match. Note : During trade matching you can go back and forth between original trades and matched trades, you can filter on symbol to see how trade matching performed on specific security.
  10. Click Next to see unmatched trades and make sure unmatched trades matches with current holdings in the broker account.
  11. Click on “Accept Trades” to save your trades into Simply Track portfolio
  12. Click on Reports->Generate Schedule D to run your Schedule D

File Import

  1. Login Ameritrade account
  2. Click on Portfolio & Accounts
  3. Click on History and Statements
  4. Select date range and then click on download to save the data into .CSV file
  5. Once you have trades ready in .CSV file follow the instructions outlined in this document

E*Trade

Online Import

E*Trade customers can download trade history using Simply Track online import. However only last 90 days of trade history available during online import, use file import method to import more then 90 days. We recommend using file import for the first time and then use online Import daily basis to keep your portfolio current. Customer id and PIN is same as your E*Trade website user and password.

  1. Start Simply Track
  2. Click on File->Online Import
  3. Under account held with, select “E-Trade”
  4. Under Customer Id, enter E-Trade website login
  5. Under Password/Pin, enter your password.
  6. Click on connect
  7. If you are downloading first time, make sure you check the box “import into new portfolio” and enter portfolio name “Etrade account”. Note: Simply Track automatically remembers your last download date and all your subsequent downloads are changes from last download.
  8. Click next, you should see all your trades in a download window.
  9. Click on “Match Trades” button to perform your trade match. Note : During trade matching you can go back and forth between original trades and matched trades, you can filter on symbol to see how trade matching performed on specific security.
  10. Click Next to see unmatched trades and make sure unmatched trades matches with current holdings in the broker account.
  11. Click on “Accept Trades” to save your trades into Simply Track portfolio
  12. Click on Reports->Generate Schedule D to run your Schedule D

File Import

There are 2 methods of file import, either you can download an Entire Year or from Transaction History

1. Importing Entire Year

E*Trade provides trade transactions in a CSV file format.

  1. Login to Etrade Account
  2. Click on Trading & Portfolios Tab
  3. Further click Account Records Tab
  4. Under Summary Tab, click the link with title "Export your 2006 trades to Microsoft Excel"
    When prompted with the filedown window, choose the option to "open" the file (please do not select "save" option at this point)
  5. Then all trades are opened in an Excel spreadsheet.
  6. Save the file as a csv(comma delimeted) type.
  7. Note : E-Trade CSV file is provided with quoted strings that looks like the example below. This will cause an error because the quotes at the end of the string define it as one field instead of comma separated fields. The file does not follow the .CSV standard. This is easily corrected with Notepad, search for " and replace it with nothing.

once the file is ready here are step to import into Simply Track

  1. Choose "File Import" under File
  2. Choose "Generic Import Format" for Input Data Format (Default option)
  3. Choose "Text File/Excel File" for Input Format (Default option)
  4. Data mapping should be as follows:
    Trade Date: 1
    Action/Trade Type: 2
    Symbol: 3
    Quantity: 6
    Price: 7

    Commission: 8
    Sec Fee: 0
    Net Amount: 9

2. Importing Transaction History

E*Trade provides trade transactions history on the webpage, you need to cut and paste your trades into Excel file and then import the file into Simply Track.

  1. Login to Etrade Account
  2. Click on Trading & Portfolios Tab
  3. Further click on Transaction Tab
  4. Once you have trades ready in Excel file follow the instructions outlined in this document

Scottrade

Online Import

Scottrade customers can download trade history using Simply Track online import. Customer id and PIN is same as your Scottrade website user and password or Quicken user and password.

  1. Start Simply Track
  2. Click on File->Online Import

  4. Under Customer Id, enter Scottrade website login
  5. Under Password/Pin, enter your Scottrade PIN
  6. Click on connect

  8. Click next, you should see all your trades in a download window.

  10. Click Next to see unmatched trades and make sure unmatched trades matches with current holdings in the broker account.
  11. Click on “Accept Trades” to save your trades into Simply Track portfolio
  12. Click on Reports->Generate Schedule D to run your Schedule D

Charles Schwab

Online Import

Schwab customers can download trade history using Simply Track online import. Customer id and PIN is same as your Schwab website user and password or Quicken user and password.

  5. Under Password/Pin, enter your Schwab PIN
  6. Click on connect

  8. Click next, you should see all your trades in a download window.

  10. Click Next to see unmatched trades and make sure unmatched trades matches with current holdings in the broker account.

File Import

  1. Log on to your Charles Schwab trading account web site and Click on the Account tab and then History tab.
  2. Follow the instructions provided by Charles Schwab to Download the history into CSV file.
  3. Your downloaded file must be in this format

Fidelity Investments

Online Import

Fidelity Investments customers can download trade history using Simply Track online import. Customer id and PIN is same as your Fidelity Investments website user and password or Quicken user and password.

  1. Start Simply Track
  2. Click on File->Online Import
  3. Under account held with, select “Fidelity Investments”
  4. Under Customer Id, enter Fidelity website login
  5. Under Password/Pin, enter your Fidelity Investments PIN
  6. Click on connect
  7. If you are downloading first time, make sure you check the box “import into new portfolio” and enter portfolio name “Fidelity Investments account”. Note: Simply Track automatically remembers your last download date and all your subsequent downloads are trade changes from last download.
  8. Click next, you should see all your trades in a download window.
  9. Click on “Match Trades” button to perform your trade match. Note : During trade matching you can go back and forth between original trades and matched trades, you can filter on symbol to see how trade matching performed on specific security.
  10. Click Next to see unmatched trades and make sure unmatched trades matches with current holdings in the broker account.

Online Import

Penson customers or firms that use penson as clearing house can download trade history using Simply Track online import. Customer id and PIN is same as your Penson Investments website user and password or Quicken user and password.

  1. Start Simply Track

  4. Under Customer Id, enter Penson website login
  5. Under Password/Pin, enter your Penson password
  6. Click on connect
  7. If you are downloading first time, make sure you check the box “import into new portfolio” and enter portfolio name “Penson”. Note: Simply Track automatically remembers your last download date and all your subsequent downloads are trade changes from last download.
  8. Click next, you should see all your trades in a download window.

There 2 ways you can import data from Interactive Broker into Simply Track.

Annual statements

IB changed 2006 annual statement format, To work with IB new annual statement we have added new option called “IB annual stmt new” under Simply Track File import. IB provides annual statement as HTML file, make sure you save the annual statement as .html in your hard drive and then use Simply Track file import , Click here to read detailed instructions with screen shots.

If you are trying to import 2005 or before annual statement then use “IB annual stmt old” under ST file import.

Trade Station let's you create a CSV file of your trade transactions. Your downloaded file must be in the following format and a sample layout of the file is provided below.

Free Trade Import Instructions
FreeTrade let's you create a CSV file of your trade transactions. Your downloaded file must be in the following format and a sample layout of the file is provided below. Date Id Type Description Value

Once your file is ready follow the Import Instructions outlined below under Importing into Simply Track after the input file is ready.

Once your text file with trades to be imported into simply track are ready then Run Simply Track Program.
  • Go to File>Import.
  • Type the portfolio Name.
  • Under Input type Drop down list select your file type.
  • If your trades already split adjusted then uncheck the Split Adjusted Check box.
  • Click on import button to import all your trades into Simply Track. During the import simply track automatically connects to Internet Quote server to determine stock splits for each symbol and applies split adjustments to your trades.
  • During the import Simply track maps your trades in First In First Out (FIFO) format.
  • Upon successful completion of the import simply track display all the mapped trades , Current holdings and error. You can delete the trades that you think are not mapped correctly.
  • Also note that if the trade is a short sale and covered on the same day simply track has no way to know that these trades are shorts, hence it maps these trades as long. Make sure you correct these trades by going into Stock>Edit option.
  • After successful import into Simply track, you can click on Reports to generate various reports like Schedule-D, Portfolio analysis and more.
Note: To generate accurate schedule-D make sure you include last year open positions.A sample file for each of these importing formats can found in your simply track Installation directory(c:\program files\simply track)
